Michelle Obama and 'Supermarket Shopping 101'

Not even the President is listening, but her anti-obesity "Let's Move" campaign is now on video, staring First Lady Michelle Obama.
It's an online course: “Supermarket Shopping 101.”

The course, which is featured on the letsmove.gov website, tells shoppers to “steer clear of the cookie, snack and soda aisle.”

For the really stupid, the "Supermarket Shopping 101" includes advice on the best time to shop and how to navigate a grocery store.

“You’ve got your list, you’ve got your cart--let’s get shopping!” we are told.
“Focus on the perimeter of the store first--that’s typically where you’ll find the produce, meat and dairy sections, which stock fresh, whole foods that should comprise the bulk of your shopping list.”

“Supermarket Shopping 101” tells shoppers to leave the junk food for last, in order to “train yourself” to eat the First Lady wants you to eat.

“Steer clear of the cookie, snack and soda aisle until after you’ve collected everything on your list--at that point, your cart should be full, which might make you feel less tempted to buy things you don’t need."

“By always heading to the essential areas of the store first, you’ll train yourself to form a shopping pattern that’s healthier – and, in time, will get you in and out of the store faster.”
(whatever that means)

Assuming everyone is really idiotic we are instructed “to avoid walking in circles around the supermarket, divide your ingredient list into categories such as ‘Produce,’ ‘Dairy & Eggs,’ ‘Meat,’ ‘Canned Goods,’ ‘Dry Goods’ and ‘Frozen Foods.’”

“That way, you know where to go and what you need. (And hopefully steer clear of impulse buys!)."

Wednesday is the preferred shopping day, according to Let’s Move, which adds, “Whenever you decide to shop, just don’t do it on an empty stomach--hunger pangs will tempt you to stray from your shopping list.”

Further instructions include “making healthy choices,” such as: “plain popcorn, frozen edamame, nuts, dried fruit, low-fat yogurt, hummus and raw veggies or salsa and baked tortilla chips.”

Asked by Parade magazine, "What do you hope to accomplish in your second term?” First Lady Michelle Obama said she wants to "impact the nature of food in grocery stores" with the aim of cutting sugar, fat and salt.

First Lady Michelle Obama even found it necessary to give eating advice to Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas appearing on the Jay Leno Show.
We guess the question is, are you eating better now than you were four years ago?

The White House 2000 calorie Governor's Dinner

The White House Sunday hosted the nation’s governors and served up a more than 2,000 calorie dinner.

The governors were served a feast of adipose-marbled steak, vegetables with cream and butter and of course, dessert.

Here's an example,  a proposal on the White House website from Wednesday.

Chef’s salad: (1 cup romaine, .5 oz low-fat mozzarella,
1.5 oz grilled chicken) with whole wheat bread
Soft pretzel (2.5 oz)
Corn, cooked (1/2 cup)
Baby carrots, raw (1/4 cup)
Banana
Skim chocolate milk (8 oz)
Low fat ranch dressing (1.5 oz)
Low fat italian dressing (1.5 oz)

Here’s what the governors ate at their dinner:

Garden salad
Bread and butter
Ribeye steak 12 oz
Creamed spinach
Crab mac and cheese
Pear tart with ice cream
White wine

Based on estimates of caloric totals for each of the items that the governors’ ate, the total intake amounted to around 2,250 calories.

The recommended intake for an adult male during the entire day is about 2,500 calories. For women, it’s about 2,000 calories.
